Mike Lynn '75

Mike Lynn attended Chaminade from 1969–1975, a member of the first class to go through six years of Chaminade as well as the first co-ed 9th grade class. As a student he played basketball throughout his four years of high school and was Junior Class President.

Mike continued his education at St. Mary’s College earning a B.A. in English Literature in 1979, but he didn’t leave the halls of Chaminade for long. That same year Mike returned to Chaminade as an English teacher at the middle school. In 1983 he transferred to the high school, where he taught until 1990.

Mike’s role at the high school expanded far beyond ‘teacher.’ He was also very active in Chaminade athletics. Mike coached basketball from 1979-1990. As Head Boys Varsity coach (1981-1990) Mike led the boys to three league championships, six playoff appearances, and was named San Fernando Valley Coach of the Year in 1984.

Mike also racked up significant victories as a volleyball coach from 1985 – 1989. As the girls’ volleyball coach, Mike coached the team to three championships in five years and helped them become the first team to make volleyball playoffs in Chaminade history. In 1986, the team ranked 6th in Southern California. In 1989, Mike started the boys’ volleyball program and coached them successfully into the playoffs their first year.

In addition to coaching basketball and volleyball, Mike also found time in his busy schedule to coach tennis from 1979 – 1983. Chaminade tennis holds a special place in Mike’s heart since it was a Chaminade tennis coach and teacher, Sue, who stole his heart and later became his wife.

In 1988, Mike took the position as Chaminade Athletic Director. As Athletic Director Mike co-founded the Chaminade Alumni 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament with Joe Fabian ’82, which he has proudly participated in ever since. Mike also assisted in the creation of the Alumni Hall of Fame with the help of President Jim Adams and then Alumni Relations Manager Geoff McCarron ’59. This event, celebrating athletic achievements of Chaminade alums and coaches, later honored Mike for his achievements in coaching.

In addition to his many athletic contributions, Mike also served on the Board of Directors from 1994 – 2000 and is currently a Chaminade Employee Benefits consultant.

Outside of Chaminade, Mike enjoys volunteering in his community. As an Altar Serving Coordinator for Good Shepherd Parish, Mike trains children from grades 4 – 8 to altar serve and helps coordinate the schedule for all masses. He also weaves his passion for basketball into his passion for volunteering. He has served as a volunteer basketball shooting coach for a variety of local charity basketball camps and clinics and is a founding member of the Board of Directors for Hoops for the Hungry Classic, a local high school showcase and coaches clinic to raise funds and awareness for the poor and homeless. Mike has helped to organize and coordinate this event from 2004 to the present and it has raised in excess of $100,000 for local charities serving the poor and homeless. Mike was also the Founding President of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School in 1999 and served on the Advisory Board from 1999 – 2002.
