Fred Gabourie '59
Fred Gabourie served Chaminade most recently as the Honorary Chairman of the 50th Anniversary Gala, but his drive and energy belie the “Honorary” sobriquet. Fred conceived of the idea of raising money for the Alumni Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund, formed the committee, recruited key volunteers, helped to convene and lead the organizational meetings at Chaminade Hall and made innumerable solicitation calls from his home near Atlanta, Georgia. His leadership resulted in more than $20,000 being added to the fund and a program for continuing to add funds each year to the endowment.
From a “summer job” in the employee benefits field while attending college, Fred began his career in the insurance industry. After learning the basics of sales for benefit insurance, he began his climb in management and in 10 years was president of a life insurance mass marketing agency. He moved to Anaheim as President of Walker & Lee Insurance Agency and, within the next decade, founded and managed the Fred L. Gabourie Insurance Agency. These successes, his personality and knowledge, led to Fred starting an insurance consulting company that he sold in 1997 and became a full-time volunteer.
During 2002 and 2003, Fred managed a delicate balancing act in supporting Chaminade while continuing his work as a Hospice volunteer and leader at the WellStar Community Hospice in Austell, Georgia. Here Fred is a resolute, open, caring volunteer to the terminally ill in their homes and numerous other health care settings. He also devotes his time to the community outreach board of the WellStar Kennestone Hospital Regional Health Board.
Over the last 20 years, in addition to his WellStar work, Fred has assisted children with disabilities, volunteered in Boy Scouts of America, Rivers of the World – which provides medical aid and housing assistance to native tribes, and the Albert Schweitzer Foundation. Interwoven through work and community support, Fred has made a special effort to organize various class reunions, as well as full-blown Cheviot Hills reunions for eight graduating classes from this era. This is most appreciated since Fred, and his lovely wife Michelle reside in Canton, Georgia.
