Professional Staff Role
In addition to the duties and responsibilities as outlined in each contract, this section provides additional detail about faculty and counselor responsibilities, hours and attendance, the classroom, administering student discipline and communication with parents and others. These are not exhaustive lists but are examples of expectations that Chaminade has for its faculty and counselors (professional staff).
Responsibilities
It is the responsibility of the professional staff member to:
- Maintain appropriate boundaries (in and outside the classroom) recognizing that relationships with students must be professional at all times; understanding and acknowledging that students are not one’s 'friends' or 'children'.
- Meet alone indoors with a single student only when necessary. When meeting indoors alone with a student, the meeting shall occur in a room with a clear view from the outside to meeting attendees. This clear view may be through a door that is fully open or through a window in a door that measures at least 24” wide and 24” tall, and with no obstruction to the view into the room.
- Commit to and actively participate in professional growth and renewal opportunities on an ongoing basis. This includes completing required professional development.
- Set guidelines to promote a positive self-image to each child.
- Respect the rights and dignity of each child.
- Provide a stimulating learning environment for each child.
- Exhibit enthusiasm for the topics he/she teaches or counsels.
- Collaborate as a team player with colleagues and administrators.
- Partner with parents and family, including by communicating effectively and frequently with them.
- Market Chaminade by a willingness to showcase areas of expertise and to communicate with prospective families including attendance at Chaminade Admission events as may be required from time-to-time.
- Support student efforts both in and outside the classroom, including by attending school activities and supporting the student retreat program.
- Learn new skills as changing professional standards and pedagogy dictates.
- Model self-discipline and ethical behavior.
- Dress professionally and maintain personal hygiene (see dress code section).
- Respond to messages, including email, from all constituents, including administration, students, and families, parties within 24 hours unless there are extenuating circumstances.
- Complete CPR, first aid, Virtus, Workplace Harassment and any other required training.
Hours And Attendance
The professional staff member will:
- Hours on campus may vary from day to day depending upon assigned duties, full-time faculty members are required to be on-campus by 7:45 a.m. each regular workday and stay on-campus until 3:30 p.m. at a minimum.
- Staff are expected to be on-site and available during these school hours and other times as may be requested.
- Arrive at Chaminade on time and work their full daily schedule unless permission is obtained in advance to do otherwise.
- In the case of an emergency or illness, notify their supervisor as soon as possible of a request for leave, but in no event later than 7:30 a.m. of the morning for which leave is requested.
- Attend all required meetings throughout the year, graduation events, open house events and any other designated events.
- In addition to teaching or counseling duties, professional staff are required to participate in or supervise other activities as may be assigned, including some which occur before or after school, in the evenings, and on weekends.
- Use instructional time effectively and give full attention to the students by limiting non-student or non-developmental conversations with colleagues to the absolute minimum.
The Classroom
The faculty staff member will:
- Accept responsibility to maintain an orderly and neat classroom during school hours.
- Accept responsibility for keeping common areas neat and orderly.
- Accept responsibility for the use and care of Chaminade property, including technology tools.
- Treat students with respect while maintaining their dignity at all times.
- Rude and inappropriate comments and conduct including sarcasm are not appropriate.
- Create weekly lesson plans before the Monday of the week in which they will be taught and keep the plans in a place easily accessible by a substitute teacher.
- Create a substitute file that includes at a minimum: class list, daily schedule, discipline plan, explanation of where specific materials are kept.
- Inform the Vice Principal of the progress of students and concerns about students.
- Keep daily attendance and developmental records.
Administering Student Discipline
Professional staff are expected to handle disciplinary problems in a positive and prompt manner. A comprehensive student discipline policy is set forth in the applicable Chaminade Parent/Student Handbook. Professional staff are expected to be knowledgeable about the provisions of that policy. Under no circumstances should corporal punishment be used with students. The Dean of Students should be notified of any ongoing concerns. The professional staff member should also promptly inform parents of on-going discipline issues or problems. For additional direction in this area, professional staff should consult with the appropriate Dean.
