2011 Inductees

Amy Cook '91

Amy made the most of her time at Chaminade, playing not just one sport, but three varsity sports and one JV sport: soccer, tennis, JV volleyball, and even varsity football!

Amy began her Chaminade athletic career in 1988 playing for the JV volleybal team and JV soccer team which she also captained. In 1989, she joined the tennis team and continued throughout her time at Chaminade. The tennis team was undefeated in league play and advanced to the quarter finals. In 1990, she advanced to varsity soccer and also added varsity football to her roster, becoming the only Chaminade student to play in the Homecoming game and win Homecoming Queen on the same night!

After Chaminade, Amy continued on to play for Orange Coast College where she played tennis and soccer. During her time at OCC, Amy's team won the 1994 State Championship and Conference Championship and won All Conference in 1993 and 1994. In 1994, Amy and her partner won the Doubles State Championship.

Amy continued her college athletic career at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa where she earned an athletic scholarship in soccer. She was later recruited to play on the tennis team (doubles).

Amy stayed in Hawai'i where she is a Career Counselor at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa in Honolulu, HI.

Vaughan Kastor '83
Vaughan participated in many sports during his time at Chaminade, including baseball, football, track and cross country. Although he excelled at all of his athletic endeavors, his track career truly makes him a star. In fact, he still holds the High School Record for 800m at 1:55:43.

His love of track continued after graduating from Chaminade and he ran for may teams. From 1983-1988, Vaughan participated in both cross country and track for California State University, Northridge. As well as his Chaminade record, he holds the Collegiate School Record for the 800m (1:49:21). He was ranked in the top 10 at CSUN in 400m, 800m, and 1500m and was nominated CSUN's Most Outstanding Performance of the Year.

After his graduation, he was sponsored by the Long Beach Track Club, NIKE Track West and Asics Track West. He has competed at National and World Class levels since 1986 and competed on the European and Australian circuit from 1990-1995.

Vaughan holds many honors including the 1983 Santa Fe League Track MVP and the 1988 NCAA Track and Field All American. In 1989, he won the 800m for the Stockholm Games. Vaughan was ranked 37th in the United States by Track and Field News in 1992. From 1995-1997, Vaughan was a champion in the US National Masters. In 2007, he won 4th place in the 800m at theWAVA World Championships in Italy and is listed in the top 10 world rankings at both the 400m and the 800m.

Rick Lawson

During his career at Chaminade, Rich made his mark on Chaminade students in many ways as a teacher, Dean of Students, and especially as a coach.

Rich spent several years teaching Religion, History, and PE classes. In 1988 after 6 years of teaching, Rich began coaching football. In 1993, he became the Head Football Coach. In his first year as Head Coach, his team won the Mission League Championships but lost their playoff game to Corona Del Mar in the final seconds of the game. They would go on to the CIF Division IV playoffs the following year as well. In 1995, the team had a winning record of 9-1 and made it to the Division III Semifinals. They were ranked 5th in the Valley and #19 out of the 371 schools in the Los Angeles area. The defense was ranked #1 in the Valley for large schools and #1 in the CIF. Rich also coached track at Chaminade from 1982-1986.

In addition to coaching football and track at Chaminade, Rich coached several other schools in the Valley including Notre Dame High School (1978-1980), Glendal College (1981), and Pierce College (1982-1985). During the summer of 1986, Rich co-headed the Helsinki Roosters in the National European American Football League.

Rich currently works for Malibu High School, teaching and heading the surf team. He was their Head Football Coach from 1996-2004 and Head Golf Coach from 2002-2010.

Curtis Rothschiller '76
Curt Rothschiller had an impressive football career at Chaminade. He played JV football for two years and varsity football the following two. He was nominated the Most Valuable Player for his football team in 1975. Curt was the First Team All Frontier League Defensive Back as well as the First Team All CIF Defensive Back. He was recognized by the Daily News as an All Star Classic.

In addition to football, Curt also ran track for two years.

After graduating from Chaminade College Preparatory, Curt went on to play for Porterville College where he was twice nominated the All Conference Defensive Back.

After an impressive playing career, Curt went into coaching and he has coached at Westlake High School as the Varsity Assistant Coach from 1989 to the present. During this time the team has had three CIF Champions: Defensive Backs, Receivers and Quarterbacks. He has also been the Quarterback and Receiver Camp Coach from 2007 to the present.

Curt holds a Bachelors degree in Psychology and is currently working on his Masters. He has worked for the Ventura County Sheriff's Office for 31 years, 17 of those years in Narcotics. He was twice nominated the Regional Narcotics Officer of the Year. Curt is currently a seargeant with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office's Crisis Intervention Team.

Derek Snyder '01

While at Chaminade, Derek earned a number of awards and honors and set the fencing record with 1915 wins and 542 losses, an average of .779. Starting in seventh grade, he earned his varsity letter every year. He was voted Most Valuable Fencer of the Year every year from 1997-2000 and Foil Fencer of the Year in 1999 and 2000. He also won Chaminade Outstanding Athlete of the Year in 2001. Derek captained many of his teams over the years.

His achievements outside of Chaminade are even more impressive. A four-time National Champion, eight-time Pacific Coast Champion and a four-time California State Foil Champion, Derek also competed in the US Olympic Trials in 2000. He took 9th place in the US Olympic Trials for Men's Foil. Derek was a three-time memer of the US National Team (Under-17 and Under-20)and also a USA team member for the Junior World Championships in1999, 2000 & 2002. He won the silver medal for the USA Epee Team in the 1998 World Youth Games in Russia and the bronze medal in the 2001 British World Cup. He held the four-year individual record in California State Championships 42-0. Derek's highest career International ranking was 12th place in the Junior Men's Foil (2001) and highest national ranking was 2nd in Junior Men's Foil (2002). He was featured in Sports Illustrated and on ESPN School Sports.

After his impressive high school career, Derek went on to the University of Notre Dame where he set the fencing record with 104 wins and 19 losses, an .864 average. While at Notre Dame, Derek's team went to the NCAA Championship in 2002 and 2003, taking 7th and 5th place. Derek also went to the NCAA Midwest Foil Champion in 2004 and was ranked 14th in Open US Foil Rankings in 2002. One week after winning the 2004 NCAA Midwest Foil Championship against the eventual 2004 NCAA Champion, Derek broke his fencing hand in practice and consequently could not compte in the 2004 NCAA National Championships or the Olympic Trials.
