Chaminade Junior on way to Earning Helicopter Pilot's License

This past year, Breeana Kovelman ’14 decided to get her license to fly helicopters. At age 16, she is the youngest female to train at the Elite Helicopter Flight School, in Van Nuys. Instructors are amazed at Breeana’s ability to handle the fine motor control of both hands and feet that go into flying a helicopter. They believe that much of this coordination can be accredited to her musical training. Read More

A Message from the Office of the President

Dear Chaminade Family,
I wanted to bring you up to date on a situation on our High School (West Hills) Campus this morning. At approximately 9:30 a.m., we received a phone call alerting us to the possibility of a person on our campus carrying a weapon. High School personnel followed protocol and the school was immediately placed in lockdown and the police were notified. The Topanga Division of the LAPD arrived on the scene within 5 minutes of that call and students were secured in classrooms with teachers and staff.   Read More

Middle School Music Teacher Advances to the Quarterfinals for the Music Educator Award

Kathy Rohrs, Chaminade’s middle school music teacher, has advanced to the quarterfinals for the first–ever Music Educator Award. A total of 217 music teachers from 195 cities across 45 states have been announced as quarterfinalists for the Music Educator Award presented by The Recording Academy^® and the GRAMMY Foundation^®. In total, more than 30,000 initial nominations were submitted from all 50 states. Read More

Chaminade Selects New High School Principal

President James Adams announced on February 12 that Stephen Lepire has been appointed as the new high school principal of Chaminade College Preparatory. After a three-month long, nationwide search, Mr. Lepire has been selected and will begin his tenure on July 1, 2013. He is currently principal of Redwood Middle School in Thousand Oaks, where he has served since July of 2009. Read More

Middle School Robotics Head to California State Championship

The Middle School VEX Robotics Team 83 had an outstanding showing at the California Academy of Math and Science in Carson. The team made it into the finals and received the Overall Excellence Award. The Chaminade Middle School Mock Trial team went undefeated through a month of competition in the Constitutional Rights Foundation Mock Trial Competition to take the Los Angeles County title.  The Los Angeles County competition is one of the largest in the country with over 130 teams competing.  This is the third championship and fifth appearance in the finals in the six years of the program. Seventeen high school students participated in the first ever NaNoWriMo held at Chaminade! NaNoWriMo, short for National Novel Writing Month, is a world-wide phenomenon where writers challenge themselves to write a novel in 30 days. The focus is on quantity, not quality! Goals ranged from 30,000 to 50,000 words and we had three students who reached or exceeded their goals, Lis Carlton ’14, Eleanor Frost ’15, and Kate Nations ’15. Read More 

Speech & Debate Coach Earns First Diamond
Coach Award

Marianne Rosen, the high school’s speech and debate coach, has just earned distinction as a first diamond coach in the National Forensic League. J. Scott Wunn, Executive Director of the National Forensic League, sent Marianne a letter announcing this distinction. Under Marianne’s instruction, Chaminade students have earned more than 15,000 credit points through speech and debate presentations, competition, and service. Read More

The Chaminade family celebrated the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi with the Blessing of the Animals on Thursday, October 4 at the Chatsworth campus. Everyone was invited to bring a pet (or pets) for a blessing. This special ceremony is held annually in remembrance of St. Francis Assisi, who was known for his respect towards all God’s creatures.

With junior right-hander Kevin Victoria on the mound, Chaminade won its Southern Section Division 2 wild-card match-up against Paso Robles, 6-1 on Tuesday, May 15.  Victoria struck out nine batters in six innings of work.  The Eagles’ victory moves them on to a first-round road game at Mission Viejo High School on Thursday, May 17.  First-pitch is at 3:15 p.m. and junior left-hander, Kevin Lewallyn, will take the mound for Chaminade.

For three days members of both the High School and Middle School Eagle Engineering program competed at the 5th Annual VEX Robotics World Championship, which this year was held at the Anaheim Convention Center. The competition brought together the top 600 VEX teams from around the world in three divisions of middle, high school and college. Chaminade College Preparatory gathered the community together for an early Tenebrae on the Tuesday of Holy Week with a live stage production of Hugh McElyea’s Tenebrae: The Passion of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.  Held in the Tutor Family Center for the Performing Arts, the sold out performance featured students from Chaminade’s orchestra, Middle School and Upper School choirs, as well as alumni, parents, teachers, and friends of the School. Read More

Chaminade Film Students Go Behind the Scenes

The Advanced Film classes (Film III, IV, and V) visited the location shoot of the upcoming film Get a Job (2013). The students were guests of the cinematographer David Hennings, whose daughter Maddie ’12  is a current Film III student.  In between takes and camera set-ups, the students spoke with the director, producer, cinematographer, and several other members of the crew about their filmmaking process.  Read More 

Spring Sing

Once a year, Harmony Chorus and Music Ministry combine to share their love for singing in a wonderful event known as “Spring Sing.” This fun-filled evening is held in the Media Center of the High School’s Condon Center. Harmony and Music Ministry each perform their favorite pieces of the year. The upperclassmen in Harmony Chorus are also given the opportunity to sing a solo by an artist or from a musical of their choice. They can either accompany themselves on guitar or piano, or have Matthew Park, Chaminade’s accompanist, play for them. Read More

The Chaminade C-Notes won three top honors at the Heritage Choral Festival in San Diego (March 23-25). This is a national adjudicated choral festival in which choirs are judged by experts in the choral field on many aspects of the music such as interpretation, tone, balance, dynamics, diction, blend, rhythm and intonation. Eagle Engineering Competes in Long Beach

Eagle Engineering (Team 1138) was one of 66 teams which competed at the Los Angeles Regional FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) held at the Long Beach Arena in mid-March.  Most teams came from the greater Los Angeles area, but the field also included two foreign teams – one from Chile and another from Brazil.  For 18 teams, this is their first year competing. Mock Trial Takes 2nd in L.A. County

Chaminade Takes On Arryo Grande in CIF Semi-Final

This Friday, December 2, the Chaminade Varsity football team travels 300 miles roundtrip to Arroyo Grande High school to take on the Eagles in the CIF-SS Western Division Semi-Finals.  The game is a re-match of last season’s semi-final, won by Arroyo Grande.  Currently, the Chaminade Eagles (10-2), under the direction of Ed Croson, are ranked No. 1 in the Western Division and No. 30 in the State. Titanic and Avatar Producer, Jon Landau, Visits Chaminade!

John Landau, Academy Award winning producer of two of the highest grossing box office films of all time, Titanic (1997) and Avatar (2009), visited Chaminade’s West Hills campus to speak to film students. Homecoming for the Eagles

Chaminade celebrated its 2011 Homecoming with a win 31-6 win over Mission League opponent, St. Paul on Friday, October 14.  The win capped off a fun-filled week of Homecoming activities during which students competed in various competitions and participated in spirit dress days – instead of the usual uniform, picture a sea of tourists (it was a Moroccan themed week) or students clad in orange and blue.
